“Seasoning” your Meals (Recipe Included)

We can all feel that early morning temperature dropping, which tells us that fall is on its way! Time for the changing of the leaves and the start of long sleeves (at least for this FL girl)…but should we be changing our diets too? The answer…YES! Eating foods that are “in season” is important for many reasons. There are nutritional benefits and some added fun to your cooking when learning to incorporate new foods. But don’t let this stress you out! It’s easier than you think. The new craze, for good reason, is buying locally grown produce. Although some grocery stores use this term loosely to appease their customers, farmer’s markets can ensure that you are getting your food from someone within a reasonable driving distance. Get to know the hand that feeds you and ask about their farm, their growing methods and how they cook with anything that’s new to you. Chances are that if the farmer (and whoever is helping pick and sell their produce) is passionate about what he/she does, they will be more than happy to talk about those types of things.

Another benefit to buying from a local farmer is that they will only be able to offer what grows well at that time of year. Foods that are grown during their peak season are high in nutrients and flavors! The less help our food needs to grow, the more likely you are to be eating foods that are organic, perfectly ripened and offer more bang in each bite. The levels of nutrients in everything we eat depends on the health of the soil, when it’s picked/prepared, how far it travels and how much sunlight it receives. All of these factors coexist in perfect harmony when we eat from our own backyard. If you have never been to a farmer’s market, or haven’t found one you liked, ask a friend! Go shopping together so you have someone else to bounce ideas around with. Let shopping for food become an adventure instead of a chore. Life is how you want to perceive it so choose to be excited about trying new foods and finding great people to support when giving up your hard earned money.

These weekly blogs are going to include some of my favorite recipes that are built for the season or easy to change according to what I have available. I use this quiche as a fail proof on-the-go breakfast for those busy mornings!


5 eggs

½ almond or coconut milk

½ onion

1 cup diced sweet potato (uncooked)

1 large handful of chopped kale (or any other green-collards, spinach, swiss chard)

3 slices of bacon (or any other preferred meat-turkey bacon, chicken sausage, etc)

Fresh herbs-parsley, basil, chives, rosemary

Salt and pepper


Preheat oven to 425 F
Chop onions and kale then lightly sauté’ them in coconut oil or ghee (or bacon fat if you buy local, pastured bacon)
Dice a med-large sweet potato until you have about 1 cup
Slice bacon (or sausage)
Chop any fresh herbs that you have chosen
In a large bowl mix eggs, almond milk, onions and kale mixture, sweet potatoes, choice of meat, and fresh or dried herbs
Line a large oven-safe dish (I used a 9×13 casserole dish) with coconut oil then pour in the mixture.
Sprinkle salt and pepper on top
Cook at 425 for 20 mins. Time may vary depending on oven and size of dish used. May use muffin tins, ramekins, loaf pans, etc for easy travel.
